Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Hartlepool United: Evans' flashes and Belshaw saves not enough

James Belshaw - 7

Stamped his authority on proceedings early with a commanding punch from a threatening cross. Was pleased to see Mark Shelton's drive come within arm's reach, but Belshaw reacted well to paw it away. Repelled Olomola with his fingertips, but was powerless to prevent Sterry from scoring.

Josh Grant - 5

Looked comfortable at right-back, the third position he has played in already this season. Burst forward when he could, unlucky not to go through on goal on one occasion.

Connor Taylor - 6

Stuck his head on most things and making an important block to deny Shelton.

Mark Hughes - 4

Having a tough time. Made a poor decision to duck under a lofted ball in behind which led to an awkward moment for Rovers and did not inspire confidence at the back.

Nick Anderton - 4

Did OK in the first half, unafraid to show some physicality, but after the break he came under intense pressure down the right. He and Saunders did not communicate correctly when either could have cleared with ease, and Hartlepool ruthlessly took advantage to take the lead.

Sam Finley (c) - 5

Combative and committed, but was not afforded much chance to influence the game on the ball.

Glenn Whelan - 4

Tried to open the game up with long-range passes, but his radar wasn't on point and despite playing in the central area he was a peripheral figure.

Antony Evans - 6

A flashy performance where his best moments came mainly in the first period. He put two fine through balls in behind for Saunders to chase, which led to chances, and Rovers' best moments often came from a smart turn by the midfielder.

Harry Anderson - 4

Sloppy in possession in his own half, twice giving up the ball and giving Hartlepool a chance. Some rough and tough marking made it a difficult afternoon for the winger.

Harvey Saunders - 4

Slammed the side netting with Rovers' best chance of the first half. Threatened with his pace in attack, but a moment of indecision proved costly in his own box, failing – in unison with Anderton – to execute a simple clearance that led to the winner.

Leon Clarke - 5

Won more than his fair share of flick-ons, but that was the sum of his influence before limping off before the break.

Substitutes

Brett Pitman (for Clarke on 41') - 5

Grew visibly frustrated with the service he was getting. Rovers did not always utilise his strengths. Drew a good save from Ben Killip with a late stooping header.

Junior Brown (for Saunders on 75') - 5

Stuck out on the left wing. Saw little of the ball, but handled one defensive situation well to prevent a counter attack.

Aaron Collins (for Whelan on 75') - 5

Buzzed around but with little effect.

Not used: Jed Ward, Paul Coutts, Alfie Kilgour, Sion Spence.
