Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Barrow: Evans brings the class as Whelan takes control

James Belshaw - 8

Blocked Ollie Banks' shot with his legs in the opening moments before having a long stretch with little to worry about as Rovers penned Barrow in their third. After the goal, he made vital late saves, including a crucial parry of Remeao Hutton's shot when he was unmarked at the back post.

Luca Hoole - 7

Rarely troubled defensively with Rovers dominant against 11 and then 10 men. Put in a brilliant cross in the first half, but his delivery lacked the same quality after the break.

Connor Taylor - 7

His usual aerial dominance gave Barrow little joy in that regard and he led the defence well to ensure they were not hit on the counter by the 10 men.

James Connolly - 7

Got away with an weak header early doors that gifted Banks a good chance, but he was composed thereafter and moved the ball to Rovers' creative players effectively

Nick Anderton - 6

Steady night defensively and with Barrow penned deep, he had few chances to tun into space and make an attacking impact. Was sacrificed for an attacking change on the hour, with Aaron Collins replacing him.

Glenn Whelan (c) - 8

May have drawn a few groans, but his patience distributing the ball was important. Barrow are no mugs and know how to defend their box and precision was required. His stealthy pass through the defence for Collins when the crowd was desperate for a shot created a golden chance.

Antony Evans - 9

Rovers' talisman did it again with another incredible goal. When his side were desperate for inspiration, he provided it by drilling into the roof of the net from 25 yard when all other avenues of attack had been exhausted. Was Rovers' main source of creativity throughout, sliding dangerous passes in behind the defence and it was his pinpoint through-ball that led led to Niall Canavan's first-half red card.

Elliot Anderson - 7

A new challenge for the youngster, with Barrow camped deep and very difficult to break down. Fed a superb pass between the defence to create a chance for his namesake, but

Sam Nicholson - 7

Plenty of good ideas and his usual nimble footwork without providing the killer pass or shot.

Harry Anderson - 7

Was desperately unlucky to not have at least one goal, if not two in the first half. Paul Farman's backside took the sting out of his shot and it bounced over the bar and then Anderson hit the woodwork after lifting the ball over the goalkeeper. Trademark exuberance in the second half, but Rovers tended to attack down the right more often after the break.

Leon Clarke - 5

A frustrating night. Had a quiet first half until he was hauled down by Niall Canavan in the red card incident. Missed a massive chance to break the deadlock from Evans' cross, but he stuck it high and wide unmarked in the middle. Then had to endure a few more moments of agony before being taken off, with Aaron Collins' cross just too high with the goal gaping for the 37-year-old.

Substitutes

Aaron Collins (for Anderton on 59') - 6

A sleepy start with a couple of lax touches soon after he came on, but he sharpened up and drew a fine save from Farman. His cross was just too high for Clarke, who would have had a certain goal.

Ryan Loft (for E Anderson on 70') - 5

Rarely saw the ball and was penalised, perhaps harshly, often.

Harvey Saunders (for Clarke on 79') - 6

His fresh legs were valuable once Rovers took the lead, applying pressure to the ball to allow Rovers to get out of their box when Barrow pursued an equaliser.

Not used: Anssi Jaakkola, Paul Coutts, Sam Finley, Jon Nolan.
