Bristol Rovers player ratings as defence struggles in defeat to Gillingham

Anssi Jaakkola - 6

Beaten by a good finish for the opener, and had no chance to deny Vadaine Oliver's diving header for the second goal.

Josh Hare - 4

Did not make the most of his crossing chances, and a poor defensive header against his own captain almost cost Rovers a second goal.

Max Ehmer (c) - 4

Should have dealt with the first goal and had a tough night against Gills' forwards.

Jack Baldwin - 4

Like his centre-back partner, he struggled beneath an aerial assault.

Luke Leahy - 4

Failed to make an impression in the final third and was taken off when Rovers were chasing the game.

Ed Upson - 5

Outgunned for speed in midfield with Gills' energetic side winning the second-ball battle.

Josh Grant - 5

Passive in the first half, but more aggressive on the ball after the break. Didn't make good use of his chances to shoot or pick a pass in the final third, though.

Sam Nicholson - 5

Caused Gills plenty of problems but finishing let him down again.

Erhun Oztumer - 7

Rovers best player by some distance, showing imagination and drawing the best save of the evening out of Jack Bonham.

Luke McCormick - 5

Poor decision-making on the ball cost him a part in the second half. Sees plenty of the ball, but has to use it better.

Brandon Hanlan - 5

Did not contribute enough, as the focal point of the attack, though he is short of training time after missing 10 days with an ankle injury.

Subs

Alfie Kilgour (for McCormick on 46) - 6

Did bring more solidity to the defence.

Ali Koiki (for Leahy on 64) - 6

Energetic on the left flank.

Zain Walker (for Hare on 64) - 6

Didn't see much of the ball, but gave it a good go up top. Unlucky with a pair of late chances.

Zain Westbrooke (for Upson on 75) - 6

Came on with a mountain to climb, and he could not create anything with Gills defending stoutly.

Not used: Jordi van Stappershoef, Cameron Hargreaves, Cian Harries.
