Bristol Rovers 'most serious' about interest in Plymouth Argyle defender Ryan Edwards despite links to Peterborough and Doncaster Rovers

Bristol Rovers are still keen on Ryan Edwards, according to reports.

The Gas were linked with the defender earlier this month after he announced his intention to leave Plymouth Argyle.

Edwards, 25, is out of contract at Home Park and is available on a free transfer, although he has been offered a new deal in Devon.

The Gas face competition from the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Fleetwood Town, Peterborough and Bradford City for his signature, whilst Scottish Premiership sides have also been linked.

Yet the Sun's transfer expert Alan Nixon has claimed that the Gas, along with Blackpool, are the most serious in their interest in Edwards.

Nixon claims Rovers would view Edwards as a starter, most likely as a replacement for Tom Lockyer, who has turned down a new contract in an attempt find higher-league football.

The centre-back has made 61 league appearances for Plymouth over two seasons, scoring eight goals.

This season he played 38 times as the Pilgrims were relegated to League Two.

Despite being offered a new deal at Home Park, Edwards confirmed he will be leaving the club on Twitter earlier this month, thanking them for sticking by him after being diagnosed with testicular cancer last season.

He said: "Want to say a huge thanks to Plymouth Argyle for giving me a chance to play for the club.

"It's been a crazy two-year journey for obvious reasons but what a club to represent!

"A massive thank you to everyone involved with the club, you all stood by me when I needed your support the most and that's something that will live with me for the rest of my days.

"Hopefully we cross paths sometime in the future."
