Bristol Rovers manager Graham Coughlan backs goalkeeper Jordy van Stappershoef to impress against Accrington Stanley

Bristol Rovers manager Graham Coughlan has backed second-choice keeper Jordy van Stappershoef to excel.

The Dutchman made his competitive debut for Rovers in Tuesday night's EFL Trophy game against Plymouth Argyle and generally impressed.

With Anssi Jaakkola currently on international duty with Finland, van Stappershoef is almost guaranteed to make his league debut for Rovers against Accrington Stanley tomorrow.

Coughlan said he has a lot of time for his summer signing.

"He's a great lad," the Rovers boss said. "Anssi is away with Finland and was an unused sub and they won 1-0 last night.

"It's a chance and an opportunity for him. Like I say, you give players a chance and a jersey, it's up to them to hold onto it.

"It might be a tad nervy for him tomorrow at home with butterflies, we've all been there, for the first home game, but Accrington are missing their first-choice keeper as well so it's part and parcel.

"We're really pleased with Jordy, to be fair. He's got a nice, cool, calm manner about him, he's never ruffled, he's never rushed.

"He's almost too laid back for my liking but I like him, I've got a lot of time for him, he's fitted in really well."
