Bristol Rovers manager fined over referee comments in wake of Sunderland defeat last month

Ben Garner had spent the build-up to Tuesday's night's 2-0 win over Sunderland at Wembley where he heard a disrepute charge against him stemming from events at the Stadium of Light 17 days earlier.

Garner had been incensed at the performance of referee Ben Toner for his decision to allow the Black Cats' second goal to stand following a clash of heads between Gas defenders Tony Craig and Alfie Kilgour in the build-up.

Both Rovers defenders went to attack the ball, collided, and then have Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke an unguarded route to goal from which he scored.

After the game, in which midfielder Abu Ogogo was also sent off for a relatively innocuous-looking incident, Garner said: "The second goal, I absolutely cannot fathom.

"The referee has told me it wasn't a clash of heads. I've asked for an apology because it's a very clear clash of heads and the game should stop straight away.

"The rules are the rules, it's a clash of heads, it's dangerous ... The fourth official is just there, the assistant referee is there looking at it, I’m fifteen yards away from it.

"I don’t know if he got influenced by the atmosphere at half-time but I thought first-half he was very good, second-half it just turned."

Garner was yellow carded after protesting with the match officials before Sunderland went on to claim a 3-0 win and on Wednesday the FA confirmed the Rovers manager has been fined £500 after admitting he "questioned the integrity of the match officials and/or brought the game into disrepute".

Speaking on Tuesday, after his side had beaten Sunderland 2-0 in the reverse fixture, Garner said: "I’ve learnt my lesson and I’m now aware of what I can and can’t say."
