Bristol Rovers linked with move for former Derby County and England under-20 winger

Bristol Rovers are eager to sign former Derby County and Barnsley winger Luke Thomas, according to a report.

Our sister title Gloucestershire Live reports the Cheltenham Town academy graduate, who spent part of last season on loan at Ipswich Town, is on Joey Barton's radar with Rovers needed new recruits after suffering relegation to League Two.

But the Gas are set to face opposition from French second-tier side AS Nancy, who are managed by former Tykes boss Daniel Stendel.

Thomas, a former England international at under-20 level, was born in Gloucestershire and came through Cheltenham's academy before being sold to Derby in 2016 after making just a single appearance for the Robins. He also had a trial with Portuguese giants Benfica before inking his move to Pride Park.

But his four-year stay with the Rams culminated in just two senior appearances, but he did impress on loan at Coventry City in League One in 2018/19.

His form for the Sky Blues saw him snapped up by Barnsley following their promotion to the Championship, and the 22-year-old has 63 appearances to his name in two seasons at Oakwell, scoring twice.

Thomas was sent out on loan in January, joining Ipswich Town in League One, but he made just five appearances and returned to Barnsley for personal reasons.

He tweeted in April: "For my mental and physical health I needed to take a few weeks away from the game that I love.

"I am now delighted to say I am getting better each day, feeling rejuvenated and can't wait to get back to my very best next season and do the fans and the club proud."

Thomas features on Barnsley's retained list under players either under contract or offered a new deal.
