Bristol Rovers liked with former Portsmouth man as Ben Garner plans midfield upgrade

Bristol Rovers are interested in free agent central midfielder Adam May, according to a report.

The 22-year-old is without a club after being released by Portsmouth last month, and the Portsmouth News reports the Gas are one of several clubs keen on May.

Forest Green Rovers, Cambridge United, Mansfield Town and Crawley Town are also reportedly pursuing the midfielder.

Bristol Live understands central midfield is a priority area of recruitment for the Gas following the departures of Liam Sercombe and Ollie Clarke last month.

The addition of Josh Grant brings class and depth to the base of midfield, but Rovers boss Ben Garner is targeting the arrival of more creative options.

May made 30 appearances for Pompey after graduating from the club's academy, but found regular minutes hard to come by.

He gained experience on non-league loan moves to Gosport Borough, Sutton United, Aldershot Town, and Boreham Wood since his Portsmouth debut in 2015, and last season he spent half the season with League Two champions Swindon Town.

Pompey boss Kenny Jackett declined to offer him a new deal when his contract expired in June, but May is not short of suitors ahead of the new season.

Garner has already been busy this summer with the signings of Grant, Jack Baldwin, Max Ehmer and Sam Nicholson, with several more deals expected to follow.
