Bristol Rovers legend Chris Lines reacts as Mem reunion lands on planned return date for fans

Ahead of most seasons, most fans focus on the usual key dates: opening day, Boxing Day and the final day.

This year, however, October 3 has held great significance as it is the planned date for the return of fans.

The Government hopes to open stadiums in a limited capacity from October 1, with Bristol Rovers' games before that date to be played behind closed doors.

So after Gasheads scanned through the list of fixtures to pick out their highlights or grim Tuesday-night treks, attention turned to October 3 – and a fitting fixture awaits.

Rovers legend Chris Lines, now playing for Northampton Town, is set to return to the Mem for the first time since he left his boyhood club a year ago.

Lines made more than 300 appearances for the Gas across two spells, which featured back-to-back promotions in 2015 and 2016 which propelled the Gas from the Conference to League One.

The midfielder left Rovers last summer and joined Keith Curle's Cobblers, going on to win the fifth promotion of his career in the League Two play-off final against Exeter City at Wembley.

But with the coronavirus pandemic preventing crowds from attending games for the past five months, there were fears Lines may not get the reception his service merits when he returns to BS7.

However, as things stand, he will be greeted by some Gasheads and the 34-year-old responded on social media following the release of the League One fixtures on Friday morning.

Rovers will play Northampton in their fourth league game of the season, following trips to Sunderland and Doncaster Rovers and the visit of Ipswich Town.

The fixture list can be viewed in full here.
