Bristol Rovers hero joins forces with fellow former Gas coach at National League club

Former Bristol Rovers coaches Marcus Stewart and Chris Hargreaves have been reunited at Yeovil Town.

New Glovers boss Hargreaves, formerly on first-team coach and academy manager at Rovers, has added Gas hero Stewart to his support staff at Huish Park.

The 49-year-old has been appointed head of player development, assisting Hargreaves with the first-team as they plot to improve on last season's 12th-placed finish in the National League.

“When Chris called me, this just felt like the right thing to do, I’ve been here before and I feel like I can help him," Stewart told the club's website.

“I’m here to do my best, like I did before. This is a club I’m fond of, it’s a club that’s local to me and where I have had a good relationship with the fans.”

Stewart's professional career began with the Gas in the early 1990s and he would quickly make a name for himself as one of the brightest attacking prospects in the country, scoring 24 goals in the 1994/95 campaign.

After passing 170 appearance and more than 50 goals, Huddersfield Town snapped him up for £1.2million. He was a huge success with the Terriers, prompting Ipswich Town to shell out £2.5m. At Portman Road, he was a pivotal player in their promotion to the Premier League in 2000 before scoring 19 goals in his debut season in the top flight – more than any other English player.

He would go on to play for Sunderland, Bristol City, Preston North End, Yeovil and Exeter City later in his career, ending with a career haul in excess of 250 goals when he hung his boots up in 2011.

Stewart would transition into coaching, joining the Gas as a development coach in 2012. He would later become assistant manager and work closely with Darrell Clarke, leaving after he was sacked in 2018 before reuniting at Walsall the following year.
