Bristol Rovers give talented duo a chance to shine at non-league Truro City

New Truro City caretaker manager Paul Wilkinson has made a pair of young Bristol Rovers players his first signings in the job.

Former Everton, Nottingham Forest, Watford, Middlesbrough and Barnsley striker Wilkinson, 54, was named caretaker manager until the end of the season on Wednesday at the struggling National League South side.

The following day the former Grimsby and Northampton Town caretaker manager, who has coached at Leeds United and Cardiff City, completed a double deal to sign Bristol Rovers' development youngsters, striker Harry Warwick and goalkeeper Alexis Andre Jr arriving on loan.

Warwick, 18, who signed for the club when he was 16, is an exciting talent coming through the youth system. He is Bristol Rovers Under-18s' top scorer and in October joined National League South side Gloucester City on a temporary deal.

At the time of that move, Rovers coach Lee Mansell said Warwick's loan was the highest level that any of the academy players have ever played at - while still with the Academy.

Andre Jr has made one senior appearance for the Gas, coming off the bench to replace Sam Slocombe in September 2017 when the starting stopper was shown a red card.

The Frenchman has been struggling for game time this season even within the development side with the club overstocked with goalkeepers after Slocombe returned from what was meant to be a season-long loan to Lincoln City in January. Ahead of him in the pecking order at Rovers is Jack Bonham, Adam Smith and Slocombe.

Wilkinson was handed the job at the Cornish club after manager Leigh Robinson and assistant Michael Meaker were dismissed on Wednesday after seven months in charge.

The White Tigers are a point above the relegation zone having picked up just two wins in their last 12 league games.
