Bristol Rovers fans and ex-players show support for Darrell Clarke after family bereavement

Chris Lines has led messages of support to former Bristol Rovers manager Darrell Clarke after a family bereavement.

Port Vale, Clarke's current club, announced on Tuesday the 44-year-old – a double promotion-winner with the Gas – is taking a period of leave "having experienced a close family bereavement".

"The club requests that the privacy of Darrell and his family is respected at this time," a spokesman added.

Clarke masterminded an iconic period in modern Rovers history, steering the club to back-to-back promotions to rise from the National League to League One in 2015 and 2016.

Gasheads' affection for Clarke was clear to see when he returned to the Mem in charge of Port Vale in December, and after a 2-1 victory for his side, he spoke classily about his reciprocal feelings for Rovers after a four-and-a-half-year stint in charge that ended in 2018.

"A fantastic human, and a fantastic manager," Lines – a key player in Clarke's side – tweeted on Wednesday. "Thoughts and sincere condolences to DC and the family."

Jake Gosling, who was on Rovers' books from 2014-17, said: "My thoughts go out to Darrell Clarke and his family at this tough time."

Gas CEO Tom Gorringe said Clarke is "Forever part of the Gas family" and added: "Thoughts are with you and the family DC."

Rovers' official social media channels added: "Sending you our thoughts and prayers, Darrell."

Dozens of Gasheads also send their best wishes to a manager who made so many memories in BS7.

"Thoughts are with the great man today, along with all his family and loved ones," GasCast podcast host Max Alderson said.

Valerie Holt added: "Sending massive love to DC and family. Forever one of our own".
