Bristol Rovers confirm staff have been offered voluntary redundancy as pandemic hits home

Some staff at Bristol Rovers have been offered voluntary redundancy, the club has confirmed.

Bristol Live understands the jobs at risk are not directly involved in supporting the playing operation, but the club has declined to confirm how many workers have been offered the chance to take a severance package.

The club has taken the decision due to the “deep” financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, which seen the Gas go 20 weeks without a game.

“It’s with regret that Bristol Rovers FC has had to offer voluntary redundancy to some sectors of the workforce," a spokesman told Bristol Live.

“As with the majority of global businesses, COVID-19 has a deep impact in the way the club operates.

“These measures are required to ensure the long-term sustainability of the company.

“The club will be making no further comment on the issue.”

Last week Rovers revealed the 2019/20 season was hugely successful for development of its retail offering, with sales up more than 230 per cent on the previous campaign.

But those efforts have been undermined somewhat by the pandemic, and although Rovers are due to return to action on September 12, it could be several months before the club benefits from the income of a packed Mem on matchday.

Rovers are not the only club to feel the financial strain, with Bristol Sport and Ashton Gate Stadium telling staff last week up to 40 jobs could be cut.
