Bristol Rovers confirm signing of Rotherham United and former Republic of Ireland U21 defender

Bristol Rovers have made their ninth addition of the summer, signing Trevor Clarke on a permanent deal from Rotherham United for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old defender has signed a one-year deal with the Gas, with a club option for a further year.

Clarke becomes Rovers' second signing of the day after the club announced the loan capture of Sion Spence from Crystal Palace.

"We are delighted to secure the services of Trevor," Rovers boss Joey Barton told the club's website.

"It’s important to recruit players on ability and character and he’s a great addition in both areas

"His legs and high energy will be vital to our team and it’s a bonus that he joins us early in pre-season, so he can quickly get acquainted with us, what we are trying to do and get to know his new teammates ahead of the new campaign."

The Irishman spent time in Middlesbrough's academy as a teenager before returning to his native Dublin to play for Shamrock Rovers.

The left-sided defender, a Republic of Ireland under-21 international, impressed many English clubs with his performances across close to 100 games in the League of Ireland, and it was the Millers who snapped him up in 2019.

The wing-back suffered injury problems early in his spell and played just 20 games across two seasons in Yorkshire.

His move to the Mem signals Barton is keen to deploy a back three and wing-backs at times, with versatile left-back Nick Anderton able to play as a left centre-half.

The manager now must turn his attention to the right side of his defence. Alex Rodman is a capable wing-back but has suffered from injuries, and Rovers' only registered right-back is Luca Hoole after the departures of Josh Hare, George Williams and Mark Little.
