Bristol Rovers cancel friendly against Cheltenham Town after unlikely Carabao Cup draw

Bristol Rovers have been forced to cancel one of their pre-season fixtures after an unlikely turn of events in the Carabao Cup draw.

The Gas had been due to play Cheltenham Town away in their final friendly match on Saturday, July 27, a week before their League One curtain-raiser against Blackpool.

However, in a remarkable plot twist Rovers have been drawn at home to the League Two club in the first round of the Carabao Cup - a game that would be played just two weeks after the pre-season encounter.

With neither side wanting to give anything away tactically ahead of the cup tie, the friendly has been cancelled - although the Gas are seeking another opponent for the same date.

In a statement, Bristol Rovers said: "The fixture has been cancelled due to the sides being drawn against each other in the first-round of the Carabao Cup, with the tie scheduled to take place at the Mem on the week commencing 12th August.

"The club will be looking for an alternative pre-season fixture on this date, which will be announced in due course."
