Bristol Rovers boss Ben Garner explains Sam Nicholson signing as Gas beat Hearts to sign winger

Bristol Rovers have confirmed the signing of Scottish winger Sam Nicholson.

The 25-year-old has signed a two-year deal at the Mem, subject to international clearance.

Rovers and Nicholson's boyhood club Hearts were competing for his signature after he terminated his contract at MLS side Colorado Rapids for personal reasons.

The Gas won that battle, and boss Ben Garner believes Nicholson is an exciting addition to his squad.

“We are delighted to sign Sam and are very pleased that we have managed to secure his services for the season ahead," Garner told the club's website.

"A lot of work has gone into the recruitment process and we believe he matches the type of player and character that we want in the building moving forward.

"He's got a great mixture of experience, having played at the highest level in Scotland and also in America with the MLS.

"He's a dynamic player who can play on either side of the pitch & is very versatile. Sam is a great dribbler who can both create and score goals. We hope he can have a big impact.”

Nicholson's ties to Tynecastle Park are strong, coming through Hearts' academy before playing more than 100 first-team games.

In 2017 he travelled to the United States to play for Minnesota United and Colorado Rapids in the MLS.

But instead of a return home, the next step of his career will be in the EFL after Garner successfully sold him on his vision for the Pirates.

He is Rovers' fourth summer signing after Josh Grant, Jack Baldwin and Max Ehmer.
