Bristol Rovers await news on James Daly's injury as striker shortage is exposed again

The scale of James Daly’s injury remains unclear ahead of Bristol Rovers’ League One clash with Gillingham on Wednesday.

The striker opened the scoring and won two penalties in the 6-0 thrashing of Darlington in the FA Cup second round at the Mem on Sunday.

But the 20-year-old limped off in the closing stages, making him a doubt for Wednesday’s game as the Gas vie to climb out of the relegation zone.

It was Daly’s first game out after missing two matches with a concussion.

“He’s gone over on his ankle, so fingers crossed,” Rovers boss Paul Tisdale said. “Until we get it looked at within 48 hours I won’t know.”

Rovers’ striker shortage has been atop the agenda over the past week, with Tisdale forced to field a side without a recognised goalscorer at Wigan Athletic six days ago.

Brandon Hanlan was on the bench on Sunday as he eases his way back from a sore ankle, and Jonah Ayunga is yet to return to full training after suffering a torn hamstring two months ago.

The Gas opted to enter the season with just three recognised strikers but, amid the hustle and bustle of a congested season, the cupboard appears rather bare from a depth perspective.

Tisdale will hope Daly, who has four goals this season, will miss as little action as possible, offering the former Crystal Palace prospect plenty of praise at full time on Sunday.

“He was business-like,” Tisdale said. “He got his body into the right areas and gave the referee no option but if he bangs into him he’s got to give a penalty.”
