'Bristol Rovers are a massive club' - Yeovil Town fan responds as Gasheads revel in karma of relegation banner

The Yeovil Town fan behind a now infamous banner poking fun at Bristol Rovers' misfortune has spoken out after the image came back to bite him firmly in the backside.

The Glovers fan held the sign aloft during Yeovil's 2-0 defeat to Brighton in April 2014 which saw them relegated from the Championship.

At the time, Bristol Rovers were heading for relegation from the Football League as a whole as they fell at the foot of League Two.

Seeking solace in the Gas' demise following his own side's relegation at the Amex Arena, Dan - a 27-year-old Yeovil fan from Bournemouth who doesn't want to reveal his surname or occupation over fear of further, more serious, reprisal - held aloft a sign that read: "Could be worse we could support Bristol Rovers #Non-league"

Five years on and the fortunes of Yeovil Town and Bristol Rovers couldn't be more contrasting.

A 2-2 draw at Northampton Town on Saturday was enough to end the Glovers' 16-year stay in the Football League, and the National League now beckons.

Meanwhile, Bristol Rovers confirmed their League One safety with a 0-0 draw at Fleetwood Town.

Unfortunately for Dan, football fans do not forget easily.

Several delighted Gasheads responded to a tweet from Yeovil's official account confirming the club's relegation on Saturday with the now ironic image of Dan holding up the banner.

"Obviously the last few seasons I have been fully expecting to see this image, especially when Darren Way was given an extension to his contract this season," Dan told Bristol Live.

"I’m a firm believer in if you give it, you have to take.

"Rovers are a massive club and should probably be playing Championship football, meanwhile we’ve always been non-league. It was always 'look at how far we have come', now with the tweet it’s 'look how far we’ve come down'."

After the image of the sign resurfaced, Dan decided to humour the Gas faithful and posted the following tweet.

Unfortunately, some so-called supporters may have taken things beyond a bit of banter with their south-west rivals, with Dan claiming to have received death threats from a minority.

Thankfully though, most of the responses were good natured.

"My tweet was me taking it," Dan added. "I’ve received hundreds of tweet from Rovers most in good nature and, rightly so, taking the pee out me.

"The Rovers fans that have been in contact seem to appreciate that I have taken the p**s out of myself."
