Bristol Rovers and Lincoln City set to miss out with West Ham United midfielder heading to League One rivals

Bristol Rovers look set to miss out on West Ham United midfielder Joe Powell.

The Gas and Lincoln City had both been linked with a move for the rising 21-year-old, who is set to move after failing to break into the Hammers' senior set-up.

Yet Football Insider report that West Ham have accepted an offer from Rovers' League One rivals Burton Albion for the attacking midfielder.

Powell fits the bill for the sort of player Rovers are looking to sign this transfer window - a youthful, technically talented player who also has the potential to be sold for a profit in the future.

Rovers boss Ben Garner refused to be drawn when asked about any interest in Powell earlier this month, stating he would not talk about individual targets.

He said: "We won’t comment on individual players, we’re looking at a range of targets. We want to add to what’s here.

"There’s a number of players we’re looking at, but it needs to be the right fit for the football club, it needs to be the right deal for the football club and that’s what we’re looking to do."

Yet it is believed the Hammers' asking price was too much for Rovers - although Powell is out of contract in East London in the summer.

The Gas instead signed a similar player to Powell in the form of Josh Barrett, with the West Ham youngster now set to go elsewhere in League One.

Lincoln also signed two midfielders on Friday, suggesting they realised Powell was heading elsewhere.

Powell has told the West Ham hierarchy of his desire to play first-team football in order to aid his development, having become a mainstay of their under-23 side after returning from a loan at Northampton Town last season.
