Bristol riots: Police update on officer 'brutally stamped on' at peak of violence

Avon and Somerset's chief constable has confirmed the officer who suffered a punctured lung in last night's riots in Bristol has been discharged from hospital.

The Kill the Bill protests started peacefully before descending into violence, with missiles being thrown at officers, vehicles torched and police station windows smashed at the height of the anarchy.

Chief constable Andy Marsh said the officer who suffered a punctured lung had been “brutally stamped on” in a police press briefing this morning (Monday, March 22).

He added: “I spoke to them in hospital last night, and they were barely able to speak. They’ve been undergoing X-rays and CT scans.

“We’re concerned the other officer taken to hospital has broken an arm. They were both released in the early hours of this morning and they’re now thankfully home with their families.

“For officers who were effectively trapped at close quarters, close enough to rip their shields from them and pull their helmets off, there wasn’t space to advance or retreat. It was an incredibly frightening evening for the officers there.”

Police chiefs have condemned last night's "wanton violence and destruction" and reveal 20 officers were injured.

Chief Constable Marsh and Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens have released statements in relation to the violence.
