Bristol riots: New images emerge as dog unit's 'outstanding' efforts praised

New images have emerged as Bristol's dog unit's 'outstanding' have been efforts praised.

Images show the K9 unit surrounded by protesters as they attempted to maintain order in the city centre.

The dogs and their handlers have been praised by police in London for their handling of the crisis, which saw them pelted with missiles and vehicles set on fire.

In a tweet, City Police Dogs said: "Outstanding work by the dog unit at the weekend, it can not be overstated what a ‘Force Multiplier’ these amazing animals are, the training is so important in preparing both handler and dog for such a deployment. #canisfidelis #DontDitchTheDogs #joblikenoother #k9team ^777."

A total of 21 officers were injured in the riots – two of them seriously – when they were violently confronted by people who gathered outside the Bridewell Police Station in the city centre.

Following the disorder, a manhunt is now underway for offenders and could lead to the largest release of images of wanted suspects in the force's history.

Earlier this evening, (Tuesday, March 23), photographs of 10 people police wish to speak to were released.

Detective Chief Superintendent Carolyn Belafonte said: "Officers and staff are working their way through images and footage as quickly as they can but with more than two terabytes worth of CCTV footage as well as nearly 100 officers’ body worn video cameras and more than 100 videos already sent in by members of the public to review, this will take a considerable amount of time."

The violence followed a "Kill the Bill" protest attended by an estimated 3,000 people. Following the disorder, eight men aged between 20 and 44 were arrested.

All have been released under investigation in relation to their arrest for violent disorder but one, a 28-year-old man from the Bedminster Down area of Bristol, appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court this morning charged with possessing an offensive weapon.

He is next due to appear at the same court on 10 June.
