Bristol restaurant Rock Salt boycotting Deliveroo over 'crippling' commission charges

An independent Bristol restaurant is boycotting the online delivery service Deliveroo for a week over high commission charges which it says are "crippling businesses across the city".

Rock Salt, the Indian and Chinese restaurant in Cotham Hill, have been handing out leaflets outlining their plan to take a stand against the delivery service Deliveroo over their commission charges.

The owner and chef, Kedar Subedi, said Deliveroo can charge restaurants a commission fee of up to 35 per cent.

Their restaurant started their boycott on Sunday, August 22, with it lasting for a week in order to raise awareness of alternative ways to order food from independent restaurants.

Owner and chef, Kedar Subedi, said in his distributed leaflet: “We are not in a position to turn off Deliveroo forever as it’s a large percentage of our business.

“Unfair pay for delivery drivers is not something that should be happening in 2021.

“We need our regular customers to make the switch and use alternative platforms such as Food Stuff and don’t charge excessive rates.”

The business is encouraging customers to switch to “Food Stuff” which is Bristol’s new delivery service.

They only work with independent businesses and aim to offer a flat rate service to local restaurants, whilst promoting riders on the living wage.

Deliveroo has been approached for comment.
