Bristol restaurant named best in Britain in first-ever Deliveroo Awards

A Bristol restaurant has been named the best in the country in Britain’s first-ever Deliveroo Awards for takeaway food.

Oowee Burger’s vegan off-shoot, based in Baldwin Street in the city centre, was first named ‘Best Vegan Offering’ in Britain, and then scooped the big main award of ‘Restaurant of the Year’, beating off competition from restaurants on the Deliveroo app across the country.

The inaugural Deliveroo Awards were billed as a way of ‘shaking up’ the regular awards ceremonies in the food industry and, with categories like ‘Most Instagrammable Dish’ and ‘Best Brunch’ were billed as an awards ceremony for younger people who actually use Deliveroo a lot, rather than food snobs and industry professionals.

The shortlists for the 19 categories were formed by a public vote on the app, and Bristol ended up with six restaurants shortlisted for the final vote.

They were:

Biblos (Stokes Croft) - Best Cheap Eats

Wok Boxstix (The Arcade) - Best Chinese

Eat a Pitta (Gloucester Road) - Best Eco-friendly

Turtle Bay (Baldwin Street) - Best Family Restaurant

Oowee Vegan (Baldwin Street) - Best Vegan Offering/Best Restaurant

Mr Potts Chocolate House (Park Street) - Best Dessert Only Restaurant

Oowee began in Bristol and now has a handful of traditional meat-based burger outlets in the city, and only opened the vegan version in Baldwin Street last year.

At the time of the nominations, owner Verity Foss said it was ‘crazy’.

“My initial reaction was excitement,” she said at the time.

"It's crazy to think only four restaurants in the UK have been shortlisted and we're one of them.

"Vegan Oowee is always so busy on Deliveroo and we've managed to keep a high rating since we launched, so we think that must have worked in our favour.

"It has got so big in such a short space of time and it's seen as the ultimate vegan treat in Bristol which you don't need to make sacrifices for, which we're really proud of,” she added.
