Bristol residents driving across globe in £400 Nissan Micra for Mongol Rally

A group of Southville residents are travelling across continents in a Nissan Micra worth £400.

Engineer Joe Scott, 27, and three friends are currently halfway through the 10,000-mile Mongol Rally.

When they spoke to Bristol Live on Thursday (August 8), they were waiting in a port in Baku, Azerbaijan, hoping to catch a ferry to Turkmenistan.

“The most enjoyable aspect has probably been meeting people along the way,” said Mr Scott.

Mongol Rally participants have to travel thousands of miles in a small car, but beyond the shared start and finish point, they have freedom to choose their route.

Mr Scott and his friends - engineer Osain Minogue, engineer Aleix Gemino and teacher Matt Sales - set off from Bristol on July 13, before formally beginning the adventure on July 21 in Prague.

Since then they have driven their red Micra across Europe and through countries including Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Their vehicle has not encountered any problems so far, but it has presented them with some challenges.

Mr Scott said: “The heat is one of the biggest issues. Going through Turkey it was up to 37 degrees - and in the car it was even hotter.”

The group had completed more than 5,000 miles by Thursday afternoon, by which point they were waiting for the ferry.

They hope to reach the finish line in Ulan-Ude, Russia, in the first week of September.

So far they have raised £800 for the charity Cool Earth, as chosen by event organiser The Adventurists.
