Bristol resident 'kept up at night' by 'extremely noisy' manhole cover

A South Bristol resident has claimed he is being kept awake at night by a noisy manhole cover.

Resident Tom said the loose manhole cover is outside 150 Wells Road, in Totterdown, and has been causing problems to residents for about six weeks now, with the noise being able to be heard from about 100 metres down the road.

Openreach has apologised that the manhole cover has been causing disruption, saying it has taken longer than they would like to repair.

A spokesperson for the company said they need to replace the frame and cover and this must be done safely, asking residents to please bear with them while this is planned.

The resident said that this goes on 24/7 and that, when lorries go over it, it makes an extremely loud noise like "someone hitting with a sledge hammer".

He added: "It is keeping residents awake at night.

"I put earplugs in and have the dehumidifier on as white noise and it still wakes me up."

Tom said he was told by the council the manhole cover is Openreach's responsibility.

He claimed he has reported this to them three times and that when he last spoke with them two weeks ago he was told that it was dangerous and needed repairing.

"I just want it to be fixed, even if it is just temporarily," he said. "This is a residential area and there are so many people living here."

An Openreach spokesperson said: “We’re really sorry that the noisy manhole cover has been causing disruption; it’s taken longer than we would like to repair.

"We need to replace the frame and cover and this must be done safely so please bear with us while this is planned.

"Damage to our network can also be reported online here."
