Bristol rescue centre write letter to dog that’s been waiting more than 700 days for a new home

A Bristol animal rescue centre have written an adorable letter to one of their dogs in a bid to finally find her a home.

Care staff at the shelter penned the note to sweet Amelia, a Shar Pei Labrador Cross who has struggled to find a suitable family as a result of her anxiety.

The young pup, estimated to be between three and four years old, has been with the rescue for a total of 759 days.

Beginning ‘Dear Amelia’, the letter is addressed to ‘Amelia D236’ at Bristol Animal Rescue Centre, on Albert Road.

The letter, which was shared with TeamDogs, reads: “You came into our lives back in the summer of 2019.

“You couldn’t even look us in the eye and you were so shut down our hearts broke for you, imagining what you had been through in your life.

“You were the kindest, most sweet natured girl and never once have you shown us any negative behaviour.”

It added: “We had to carry you everywhere as you had no idea what a lead was and you would curl up in a ball when we touched you and hide at every opportunity.”

The letter goes on in detail about nervous Amelia’s incredible progress during her two years at the rescue, including learning to wear a harness, walk on a lead and come out of her shell.

It continues by summing up the pup’s perfect home, which would be quiet and in a rural area.

This list includes ‘another dog who is fun and wants to play but is stable and confident with their owner’, ‘no children’ and ideally an owner who will let Amelia sleep in their room.

It features other sweet yet practical details about her, stating: “You are not a fan of water, rain or anything wet!

“You do wear a coat but if you had the choice you are a ‘fair weather walker’ only.

“When you become confused, you find it frustrating but if you are offered a toy or a treat then you soon settle.

“You love to be involved with things around the home and do like to watch when people are cooking.”

This follows a cute post shared to Bristol A.R.C.’s Facebook page, which previously joked that Amelia likes to ‘supervise in the kitchen of her foster home to ensure everything is up to her standards’.

The adorable letter concludes: “You have met a few people who we thought could be your ‘furever home’ but for one reason or another, it hasn’t been right for you or them.

“We will not give up, your home is out there somewhere and we hope that by telling your story we will encourage someone to open their hearts and home to you.

“You are worth it.”

Prospective owners should be aware that Amelia has limited hearing and has learned hand signals alongside her obedience training.

As she struggles with separation anxiety, she’s best homed in a house with multiple people, so that she’s less likely to be left on her own.

The poor pup also struggles with motion sickness so would prefer not to travel too much.

A spokesperson for the rescue added to TeamDogs: “She had a bad start in life, and deserves the best home out there.”

“She came to us as a stray, obviously quite shut down and scared of life.

“We’ve taken our time with her to give her the time and space she needed to learn to trust people and enjoy life.”
