Bristol region's Covid death toll rises by six as infections spike - area-by-area breakdown

Six more people across Bristol and its neighbouring areas have died after contracting coronavirus.

The Department of Health also confirmed today (Tuesday) 742 further people tested positive for the deadly virus over the past 24 hours in the West of England.

Two Covid deaths were confirmed in Bristol, where 346 positive lab tests were returned.

Our city's Covid rate per 100,000 people has increased to 489.2 after 2,267 cases were confirmed in one week.

North Somerset recorded four more deaths today, with the district's infections have risen by 117.

The figures come on the same day that Priti Patel warned the virus has now reached its most 'critical point'.

During a special Downing Street briefing she urged everyone to stay home, and police would be acting faster to issue Covid fines.

Public Health England's latest data - for January 5 - shows Bristol's hospitals had 275 Covid patients, rising from 252 confirmed on December 30.

The breakdown of new cases

The daily rise in cases for each part of the region is recorded below, with the total figure during the pandemic in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: +120 (6,045)

  • Bristol: +346 (22,579)

  • North Somerset: +117 (7,254)

  • South Gloucestershire: +159 (10,708)

UK cases

The UK has recorded its second deadliest day since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, with a further 1,243 lives lost to the virus.

The Department of Health also confirmed that 45,533 people had tested positive for the virus in 24 hours.

Only once, last Friday, has the daily death toll been higher, when 1,325 fatalities were announced.

It brings the UK's official coronavirus death toll to 83,203.
