Bristol region reports 65 new cases of Covid-19 as infection rates rise

Another 65 cases of coronavirus have been recorded in the Bristol region in the last 24 hours, according to the latest figures.

The statistics, published by Public Health England today (June 7), show the biggest rise was in Bristol where 40 positive lab tests were returned.

This is a significant increase from last Monday's 13 cases, and Monday, May 24's 14.

South Gloucestershire and North Somerset both recorded 11 new cases each, while Bath and North East Somerset recorded three new positive tests.

Meanwhile, the infection rates for each of the three areas also increased. The latest rolling rate figures cover the number of positive tests recorded in the seven days ending June 2.

In South Gloucestershire, the seven-day rolling infection rate increased from 10.5 cases per 100,000 population to 10.9 cases.

In Bath and North East Somerset, the rate increased from 10.3 to 13.5, while in North Somerset it jumped from 8.8 cases to 11.6.

While all three areas saw their rates increase they still fall way below the UK's national rate of 42.1 cases per 100,000 people.

There were no new Covid-related deaths reported in the City of Bristol today, with the total number of deaths with 28 days of a positive test being returned remaining at 471.

At a national level, the Government said one more person had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Monday, bringing the UK total to 127,841.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have now been 153,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The Government also said that, as of 9am on Monday, there had been a further 5,683 lab-confirmed cases in the UK.

Government data up to June 6 shows that of the 68,381,870 jabs given in the UK so far, 40,460,576 were first doses – a rise of 127,345 on the previous day.

Some 27,921,294 were second doses, an increase of 259,941.
