Bristol region has new epicentre for Covid rates, says heat map

South Gloucestershire is the Bristol region's new epicentre for coronavirus case rates, a data map indicates.

North Somerset had the region's highest rate of estimated active cases on November 25, according to King’s College London’s Covid Symptom Study.

But two weeks on, the research says South Gloucestershire has surpassed it, with 4,251 active cases per million people as of today (December 9).

In terms of total active coronavirus cases, Bristol is believed to have the most, though all areas of the region have seen their figures fall in recent weeks.

The King's College experts estimate Bristol has 1,757 active cases – down from 4,596 two weeks ago.

South Gloucestershire is thought to have 1,191 (down from 2,174), North Somerset 832 (down from 2,213) and Bath & North East Somerset 628 (down from 1,146).

Here is each area’s rate of estimated active cases per million, as of today:

South Gloucestershire : 4,251 (down from 7,761 two weeks ago)

North Somerset: 3,940 (down from 10,477)

Bristol : 3,819 (down from 9,993)

Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES): 3,304 (down from 6,031).

The Covid Symptom Study is an app which tracks people with symptoms across the country and gives an estimate for the number of people with the virus on a given day.

All four areas in the Bristol region have between 3,000 and 5,000 active cases per million people, meaning they are in the second most severe tier on the study's heat map.

It comes after Bristol's coronavirus rate fell below the national average yesterday, according to Government figures.

The city's rate per 100,000 people stands at 141.4, which is below the national average of 149.2.

People across the country are using the Covid Symptom Study app to report their health. The study also uses data from tests.
