Bristol records grim Covid milestone as cases surge

Bristol has now surpassed 10,000 confirmed coronavirus cases following a daily rise of 387.

A breakdown of the latest data also shows a spike in North Somerset, which today recorded a triple-figure.

Across Bristol and its neighbouring areas, 770 people were diagnosed with the virus on November 12.

North Somerset saw a rise of 134 as council leaders warned of a 'very worrying' rise infections.

And South Gloucestershire reported 164 new infections, with 85 in Bath and North East Somerset.

Yesterday (November 11) four deaths were recorded in Bristol - today's figures have not been released.

Across the South West, another 109 patients were admitted to hospital with coronavirus in just one day, bringing the total number of Covid-19 patients in hospital in the region currently to 726.

UK-wide, daily cases climbed by 33,470 while hospital deaths increased by 411.

Local breakdown of daily figures:

  • B&NES: +85 (2,498)
  • Bristol: +387 (10,021)
  • North Somerset: +134 (2,876)
  • South Gloucestershire: +164 (4,302)

R rate

The coronavirus' R rate in Britain has fallen below 1, according to scientists on a study.

It is now 0.9 according to the scientists on the Covid Symptom Study.

Epidemiologist Professor Tim Spector said the rate was now the lowest it has been since August and is now below 36,000 new cases per day.

He said: "Today's ZOE app data shows rates of new disease falling slowly below 36k with R of 0.9 in all nations but midlands getting worse.
