Bristol records further coronavirus-related death as cases climb by three figures

Two new deaths linked to Covid-19 and a further 525 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the Bristol region in the past 24 hours, according to official figures published today (Tuesday, August 24) - down from 577 yesterday.

One of the deaths was in the city itself while the other was reported under Bath and North East Somerset's jurisdiction.

The total number of people in Bristol region whose deaths have been attributed to Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic has increased to 1,420.

Bristol recorded the highest number of new cases, after 244 were found in the city, Public Health England's figures showed.

Another 124 cases were found in South Gloucestershire, 84 in Bath and North East Somerset, and 73 in North Somerset.

The total number of cases confirmed in each region around Bristol, with the daily rise in brackets, are as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 52,920 (+244)
  • North Somerset - 16,588 (+73)
  • South Gloucestershire - 26,450 (+124)
  • Bath and North East Somerset - 15,131 (+84)

The total number of deaths recorded in each region, with any increase in brackets, is as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 504 (+1)
  • North Somerset - 322 (-)
  • South Gloucestershire - 363 (-)
  • Bath and North East Somerset - 230 (+1)

The Government has said a further 174 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Tuesday, bringing the UK total to 131,854.

It is the highest reported daily death toll since March 12, although the figures are likely to include a lag in reporting over the weekend.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 156,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

As of 9am on Tuesday, there had been a further 30,838 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases in the UK, the Government said.

Government data up to August 23 shows that of the 89,679,178 Covid jabs given in the UK, 47,737,142 were first doses, a rise of 46,401 on the previous day.

Some 41,942,036 were second doses, an increase of 131,283.
