Bristol records biggest ever daily rise in coronavirus cases

More than 100 coronavirus cases were recorded in Bristol over the past 24 hours.

According to the latest Government data, 108 further people were diagnosed with the deadly virus in our city today (Friday, October 9). That brings Bristol's total to 2,355 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Cases have been creeping up all week in our city, with 81 confirmed yesterday, 74 on Wednesday and 42 on Tuesday.

Across the Bristol region, 221 positive lab tests were returned.

South Gloucestershire also saw a surge of 70 new cases. Its total now stands at 1,268.

Bath and North East Somerset reported a jump of 24, the total there now stands at 744.

And North Somerset recorded 19, its total is 1,269.

Across the UK

The number of new UK daily coronavirus deaths increased by 87 - the biggest death increase since July 1.

Cases across the UK have also risen by a further 13,864 - down from yesterday's 17,540.

R rate

The figures come on the same day that it was revealed the South West is thought to have the joint highest R rate of any region in England.

Both the South West and the East of England have a top bracket of 1.6, which is the highest in the UK.

An R number between 1.3 and 1.6 means that on average, every 10 people who contract the virus will go on to infect between 13 and 16 other people.
