Bristol records biggest daily jump in coronavirus cases for second time in four days

More than 150 coronavirus cases were recorded in Bristol over the past 24 hours, the biggest daily rise since the start of the pandemic.

According to the latest Government data, 152 further people were diagnosed with the deadly virus in our city today (October 13). That brings Bristol's total to 2,692 cases since Covid first arrived in our city.

And it's the second time in four days, Bristol has seen daily cases jump by record numbers. On Friday, 108 further positive lab tests were returned, which was the previous highest figure.

It means in just over a week, 642 cases have been confirmed.

The figures come on the same day 143 UK coronavirus-related deaths have been recorded - the biggest rise in four months.

Across the Bristol region, 261 positive lab tests were returned today

Bath and North East Somerset reported a jump of 43, the total there now stands at 862.

While South Gloucestershire saw a rise of 38, its total now stands at 1,386.

And North Somerset recorded 28, its total is 1,330.

UK-wide, 17, 234 new cases were confirmed, bringing the nation's total to 634,920.

Bristol University cases

More than 500 students at the University of Bristol have tested positive for coronavirus following a rise of a third in cases in one day.

The outbreak among the university's community was first confirmed last week, and on Friday (October 9) The Courtrooms student halls went into lockdown due to the virus spreading there.

The Bristol City Centre halls of residence went into lockdown after 40 students living there tested positive for Covid-19 and, since then, a second student accommodation building - one block of four flats at Hiatt Baker, in Stoke Bishop - has been instructed to quarantine.
