Bristol 'really busy' as people get out in lockdown sunshine

Police have pleaded with people to stay home after noticing parts of Bristol were "really busy" on their patrols.

As the city enjoyed a rare bit of winter sunshine today (February 6), many people were keen to head outside for their daily dose of fresh air and exercise.

Avon and Somerset Police reported particularly high numbers of people at the harbourside, which was a problem area for breaches during the spring lockdown.

Sharing an angry emoji, police tweeted from their Bristol account: "Really busy at the harbourside and waterfront areas of Bristol this afternoon.

"Please; please stay at home , remember essential travel only and only exercise within your local area."

The 'stay home' order does allow for people to go outside for certain reasons, including for exercise and for work.

One man tweeting this afternoon said: "Too many people on #Bristol harbourside, and especially Wapping Wharf, this afternoon. Unbearable."

It was not just the harbourside where crowds were reported.

One Bristol Live reader, who asked not to be named, said of Clifton Village this afternoon: "It's very busy with not many people with masks on."

Another reader contacted us reporting Imperial Retail Park in Hartcliffe was also busy, sharing images appearing to show an almost full car park.

She said: "Lockdown - what lockdown?"

One person responding to the police tweet pointed out residences along the harbourside often have little or no outdoor space.

Last month Bristol City Council urged people to stay local when heading out for their exercise, advising major green spaces like Ashton Court had been "very busy at times".

The government lockdown rules state: "You should minimise time spent outside your home, but you can leave your home to exercise.

"This should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area."
