Bristol reacts to plans for rooftop bar on city centre car park

This week, a Bristol business owner announced a campaign to turn the top floor of a city centre car park into a rooftop bar. Ben, who owns the Crafty Egg café chain, is calling for the council to turn the Trenchard Street car park's roof into an all-new venue.

The car park, which is also accessible from Park Row, is an open space with views of the city. And Ben wants to see it used to sell drinks and street food, as well as offering up entertainment. "There's no better view of Bristol," he said.

Bristol Live reported the plans, and people in the city had a lot to say about them. There were 75 comments left on our Facebook post about the story, while 62 people commented on the online story.

Some people seemed to be supportive of the idea, and agreed with Ben that the rooftop offers one of Bristol's best views. Brent Higham Santus wrote: "Often walked up here to admire the view so it could be a good idea".

Caroline Johnson said that it was a "fabulous" view, and that she spotted it on TV programme The Outlaws which was filmed in Bristol. Meanwhile, Dean Lockyer said he visited a rooftop bar in Colgone in Germany and suggested it could be a good idea for Bristol.

"Cologne had a great rooftop bar in the city on top (of) a car park, they used to drop sand down every summer and make it beach themed with deck chairs and a DJ", he wrote.

However, some people have expressed concern about losing the car parking spaces in such a central location in the city, particularly because of how close it is to Bristol's hospitals.

Sabina Kenny wrote: "Many many times I’ve tried to park there to go childrens hospital and it’s been full! Have had to drive round many times waiting for someone to leave".

And Trefor Southwell commented: "This is parking for the main hospital in the region, so no it’s needed".
