Bristol protesters unite in mission to stop war in the Middle East

Anti-war protesters have gathered Bristol to campaign against a potential conflict in the Middle East.

A stalwart group gathered in the city centre in the wake of what they describe as an act of war by US president Donald Trump.

A spokesman for organisers Bristol Stop The War Coalition said: "The assassination (of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani) was carried out in Baghdad, violating all agreements with the Iraqi government.

"Both Iran and Iraq are likely to retaliate.

"Trump has been heading for war since tearing up the nuclear deal with Iran.

"If he succeeds it will create a bigger war than we have seen so far in the Middle East.

"It will draw in major players across the region including Israel, Saudi Arabia and possibly Russia."

Economist and coalition member Martin Summers told Bristol Live: "Bristol Stop The War was originally formed after 911 and before the attack on Afghanistan.

"I'm afraid nothing much has changed.

"We would have thought we had learned our lessons by now, but apparently not.

"It just goes on and on and on, there never seems an end to it, and we are not going to stop protesting against it."

The event was backed by political groups Bristol East Labour Party and St George Labour Party.

Also lending support was the National Education Union and Bristol Unite (Retired members branch).

Bristol Unite branch secretary Maggie Roberts said: "We had a branch meeting on Wednesday were unanimous in that we should support this.

"We know about wars, it just takes one little thing and all of a sudden it escalates into something too big.

"We need to stop it before it starts."
