Bristol primary school could halve its reception intake after fall in admissions

A primary school near Bristol could halve its reception intake due to a fall in admissions in recent years.

Stoke Lodge Primary School in Patchway is proposing to reduce its admission number for reception from 60 to 30, “based on falling numbers over the last few years".

Olympus Academy Trust, which runs the school, is consulting on the decision until January 31.

If approved, it would come into force in the 2023/24 academic year.

It is one of a number of changes to admissions at schools across the city being consulted on by Olympus Academy Trust.

Others include academic entry criteria to its sixth forms raised from a Grade 4 to a Grade 5 at GCSE.

Olympus offers post-16 study at Abbeywood Community School, Bradley Stoke Community School and Winterbourne Academy.

Also being consulted is a Year 10 intake at Abbeywood Community School for pupils studying a STEM course (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

The admission for this intake would be 60, with oversubscription criteria favouring ‘looked after or previously looked after’ students and those living closest to the school.

It comes after the school announced it could welcome 60 additional year 7 pupils permanently from next year, due to an increase in demand for places there.

The trust is also consulting on a catchment area for Lyde Green Community School.

The school was scheduled to welcome its first pupils this year, and would form part of the housing development in Emersons Green.

But it has been pushed back to September 2024, with some parents saying they are distraught.

Olympus Academy Trust has been approached for comment on the proposed changes.

More information about them can be found on the Olympus Academy Trust website.
