Bristol PCSO repeatedly punched in the face in 'sickening' attack

A man has been arrested after a PCSO was punched repeatedly in the face in Bristol.

The 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and possessing a class B drug yesterday (September 13).

The victim, a PCSO, was sat in a police car in the Trinity Road area when the attack occurred.

He was punched in the face a number of times shortly before 10pm and suffered facial injuries.

Andy Roebuck, the chair of Avon and Somerset Police Federation tweeted saying that the attack was premeditated.

He wrote: "PCSO has been assaulted whilst sat in a police car. This premeditated vicious attack happened yesterday. As a consequence the officer has severe bruising, thankfully no fractures. Such attacks are #NotAcceptable.

He added the Avon and Somerset Police Federation had offered support.

Chief Inspector Paul Wigginton said: "This was a nasty attack on one of our PCSOs. Fortunately he does not appear to have suffered any lasting injuries and is due to return to work as planned later this week.

"I am sure the public will be appalled by the incident, which acts as a reminder of the sickening abuse the police can sometimes face when patrolling the streets and serving communities.

“Violence towards the police is wholly unacceptable and an investigation into last night’s incident is ongoing."

The arrested man remains in police custody - the investigation continues.
