Bristol officially prefers Caffe Nero to Starbucks and Costa

Costa Coffee may have more branches across the UK than Starbucks and Caffe Nero combined - but Bristol is officially a Caffe Nero city.

Researchers have used Food Standards Agency data to pinpoint the location of every single branch of the “big three” chains: Costa, Starbucks, and Caffe Nero.

The figures include drive-throughs as well as branches inside department stores, supermarkets and motorway service stations.

The analysis found there were 2,339 Costas, 885 Starbucks and 630 Neros nationwide - meaning Costa accounts for 61 per cent of the total share, Starbucks 23 per cent and Nero 16 per cent.

In Bristol, it Nero is over-performing - with seven outlets (22 per cent) compared to six for Starbucks (20 per cent) and 18 for Costa (58 per cent).

Other Nero cities include Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Belfast, Newcastle, and Nottingham.

Costa was particularly popular in Sheffield, Stoke, Wolverhampton and Swansea.

Starbucks cities, meanwhile, included Liverpool, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Cambridge and Preston.

The analysis also looked at which places were most skewed towards one or other of the chains.

For this, it looked only at places which had at least one Costa, one Starbucks and one Nero.

Derby was the most Costa-crazy place - with 16 Costas compared to just two Starbucks and one Nero.

Forest Heath in West Suffolk was Britain’s unlikely Starbucks capital - with six branches, compared to just two Costas and one Nero.

London’s plush borough of Kensington and Chelsea was next, with 14 Starbucks but only three Costas.

Nero, meanwhile, was particularly prominent in both Wandsworth in London and Belfast.

In Wandsworth, there were 12 Neros compared with 11 Costas and six Starbucks.
