Bristol now has 559 confirmed coronavirus cases as number of deaths recorded in UK hospitals surpasses 20,000

New figures have revealed Bristol now has 559 confirmed cases of coronavirus following a rise of 16 positive tests in the past 24 hours.

This is lower than yesterday's increases of 29 but it's likely the city's real figure is far higher, possibly in the thousands, as the government has only been testing the most severe patients.

In South Gloucestershire only one more person has tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the district's total to 312, according to the government figures released today (Saturday, April 25).

In Bath and North East Somerset, a further six positive Covid-19 tests were returned, bringing the total to 198.

North Somerset now has 200 cases after a rise of 10.

The total number of lab-confirmed cases in the UK has reached 148,377 while the number of deaths recorded in hospitals has surpassed 20,000, with a total of 20,319 marking a daily increase of 813.

Almost six weeks the chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, said keeping the toll under 20,000 would be a "good outcome in terms of where we would hope to get".

Today (April 25) home secretary Priti Patel said it would be "irresponsible" to get people’s hopes up as this is still a dangerous time for the country.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has previously announced a dramatic expansion of the criteria for who can be tested for coronavirus.

The government hopes to be testing 100,000 a day by the end of the month.
