Bristol now has 543 confirmed coronavirus cases

New figures have revealed that Bristol now has 543 confirmed cases of coronavirus following a rise of 24 positive tests.

This is one of the biggest increases the city has seen so far but it's likely our city's real figure is in the thousands because the government has only been testing the most severe patients.

South Gloucestershire also experienced an increase of seven, bringing the district's total to 311, according to the government figures released today (Friday, April 24).

In Bath and North East Somerset, a further five positive Covid-19 tests were returned, bringing the total to 192.

North Somerset now has 190 cases after a rise of seven.

The total number of lab-confirmed cases in the UK has reached 143,464 while the number of deaths recorded in hospitals has reached 19,506 - an increase of 684.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has previously announced a dramatic expansion of the criteria for who can be tested for coronavirus.

The government hopes to be testing 100,000 a day by the end of the month.
