Bristol named among UK's most hipster places based on Google searches

Bristol has inevitably been named among the most 'hipster' places in the country yet again.

For one reason or another, the city is already intrinsically associated with so-called hipsters - probably as a result of its young population, two universities, booming vegan and vegetarian food scene, street art, abundant independent shops, thriving live music scene, strong politics and general cool vibe as a result of all of the above.

They reside in areas like Southville, Montpelier, Stokes Croft and St Paul's, and if you weren't sure already, data has indisputably proven that we are surrounded by them - apparently.

According to numbers from Google Trends - which measures how many people are searching for certain keywords - only Brighton and Hove had more search traffic for classic 'hipster' terms.

These include 'craft beer', 'veganism', 'beard', 'vintage', 'podcast', 'avocado', 'BrewDog', and 'Instant Camera'.

As I said - indisputable.

The analysis gathered information about how many people were searching for those terms from different cities.

It gave each place a rank for each term, based on the volume of search traffic.

These ranks were then combined to come up with an overall 'hipster index'.

The Hipsters Are Coming clip

Bristol ranked second for searches for craft beer - microbreweries have witnessed an explosion in recent years as artisanal ale drinking has become trendy.

The city ranked third for veganism, and a plant-based diet is considered to go hand in hand with hipsterism.

It also ranked fourth out of UK cities for searches for vinyl records, which form the basis of any true hipster’s music collection.

It ranked fourth for podcasting, fifth for searches for avocado, and sixth when it came to searches for Polaroid cameras.

It came 11th for searches for the term vintage, and 12th out of all UK cities for searches for BrewDog - a brewery which has typified the craft beer boom.

Unfortunately Google Trends doesn’t provide the actual volume of searches - but it does let you compare the volume over time from one place to another.

Brighton and Hove topped the list, while Bristol was followed by Norwich and Edinburgh in the top five.
