Bristol music venues announce plans for outdoor gigs in August

Bristol is renowned for its live music scene but it hasn't played host to a proper gig since March.

The many fantastic venues across the city were closed by the Government four months ago to try and stop the spread of coronavirus as part of the UK-wide lockdown, which is gradually being eased.

Music lovers are desperately missing their live music fix, especially as festivals across the country have also been cancelled.

But next month there will be a chance for people to enjoy live music played by professional musicians, with a number of venues in the city working on plans for outdoor shows.

On July 11 the Government permitted open-air gigs, festivals and theatre shows to resume in England, as long as they have "a limited and socially distanced audience".

Culture secretary Oliver Dowden later tweeted the announcement that audiences can return for indoor performances in theatres, music halls and other venues from August 1, but it is unlikely we will see the resumption of these just yet.

Venues in Bristol to have shared their plans for outdoor gigs next month include St George's, just off Park Street, and Trinity Centre in St Jude's.

Both of the renowned venues will look to host a series of events in their spacious outside areas before considering welcoming acts and audiences inside.

"We had just started last week to look at the idea of introducing a series of small scale garden concerts at St George’s in August," said Suzanne Rolt, chief executive at St George's.

"Despite Oliver Dowden’s announcement, we’re going to stick with this for now, while exploring the possibility of some socially distanced indoor concerts in September.

"It will take a lot of planning to get the building ready and Covid-safe before we’re in a position to welcome back audiences and artists.

"We’ll be surveying audiences to check that they would welcome this development and ensuring we have training programmes in place for staff so that we can follow guidelines."

People can follow the latest updates about outdoor concerts at St George's on its website.

Trinity Centre said it will be "trialling events from July 30," starting with its DIY Arts summer drinks, which brings Bristol’s cultural sector together.

A spokesperson said: "As a multi-use space we will be trialling bringing regular classes back into the building plus a small run of outdoor events, before we are able to bring live music events back into the building."

More information about this can be found on Trinity Centre's website.
