Bristol mum is educating the world about the science of breastfeeding

Two years ago, Claire Tchaikowski, who lives in Chew Valley, made a video about the wonders of breastfeeding, focusing on the science behind nursing.

The video is now being used in hospitals and universities for training.

It was so popular, attracting interest from around the globe and huge support from the medical profession, that she's launched a company called Human Milk to teach people about the wonders of breastfeeding.

This year, Claire is beginning a pilot in a Welsh school educating A Level and GCSE pupils about breastfeeding. If successful, it could be rolled out across the country - filling a long-standing gap in children's current learning.

The 44-year-old said she struggled with everything when she first became a mother.

"I didn't have any physical problems but I was worried about everything, from whether my son was feeding too much, whether he wasn't sleeping enough," said Claire.

"Generally all the things that I now know are normal behaviours. I didn't have a clue because no one prepared me or taught me about these things.

"I joined Facebook groups and realised there were lots of other mums out there who felt exactly the same.

"I wanted to add my contribution to the conversation, to help those women who wanted to breastfeed but didn't have the support.

"Eight to nine mothers out of 10 who stop in the first six weeks say they stopped before they wanted to. The drop off in the first six weeks is about 50 per cent.

"My work isn't trying to persuade those who have made peace with not breastfeeding but it's for those who want to feed but haven't been able to.

"There seems to be a general feeling that those who carry on feeding are being a bit silly or just doing something they want to do.

"People vaguely know it's better than formula but don't know much about the facts.

"At best I hope this helps mums carry on feeding for as long as they would like to and at worst I hope it just stops people questioning mums about why they are breastfeeding."

From quizzing parents, Claire found the main reasons for women deciding to stop breastfeeding earlier than they had hope was either due to feeling pain and partners or family members putting pressure on them to stop.

"Breastfeeding shouldn't' hurt," said Claire. "Of course at the start the mum has to get used to it but if they are feeling pain or bleeding then something is wrong.

"Often just getting someone to come and sit with the mum for an hour can sort many of the issues out. It's a postcode lottery if a person gets this support.

"There seems to be a culture in England where grandparents want to help out or partners say they want to be involved in the feeding and all this puts pressure on mums to stop feeding themselves.

"There's a pressure of a mum to get her life back or a misconception she needs to help the baby have independence from her."

Claire hopes next year to launch events and workshops for mums about the science of breastfeeding.
