Bristol mum finds insects 'crawling' around her Tesco rice

A Bristol mum was shocked when she opened a packet of Tesco rice to find insects crawling around inside.

Miss Brown, from Fishponds, purchased the rice from Tesco Extra on Eastgate Road and was cooking dinner for her son when she discovered the creepy crawlies.

The supermarket has since issued a full refund along with a 'goodwill' voucher to spend in store.

“I opened the rice, took a scoop out and saw something black crawling,” she said.

“I looked in the bag and saw more things crawling."

Upon returning the 2kg bag of Laila basmati rice, Miss Brown was told it would be sent off for inspection, but that a response could take up to three months.

She said she was concerned that three months was too long when there was a risk of a potential infestation.

“People should be made aware of this to check their own bags of rice," the shopper, who is a mature student, added.

The bugs in Miss Brown’s rice appear bare a strong resemblance to insects called 'weevils'.

While weevils can be difficult to exterminate because they multiply quickly, the insects themselves are not harmful to humans.

As well as a full refund, Miss Brown yesterday received a £10 'goodwill' voucher from the supermarket giant.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We are sorry to hear about this.

"Our rice is thoroughly checked throughout the production process and again at the packaging stage.

"We’re pleased to hear that the customer brought the packet into store so our colleagues could provide a refund and investigate."
