Bristol Mayoral Elections 2021: BristolLive to host mayoral hustings

In just over a week's time, people in Bristol will be casting their vote for the next mayor.

On Thursday, May 6, people across the Bristol region will be heading to the polls to vote in up to four elections.

In one of the elections, voters will get to choose the individual who will run the city for the next three years in Bristol's third ever election for city mayor.

On the same day, the city will also decide what the make-up of the council chamber will look like as the 34 wards across Bristol head to the polls to elect the city's 70 councillors.

The Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) and the Combined Authority Mayor for the West of England (WECA) elections are also on the same day.

Ahead of the elections, we have been hosting a series of weekly debates around the biggest issues facing the city, such as housing and transport.

The first debate was on housing (you can read our coverage of what was said here) while last week's was on transport and the environment (to read the coverage of these hustings, visit here).

And our third debate will be our first Mayoral hustings and will take place on Thursday (April 29) at 5pm, via our Facebook page.

We will be joined with the mayoral candidates from the main parties:

  • Marvin Rees, for the Labour Party, who is the current Bristol Mayor and is running for re-election in May.

  • The Green Party's candidate Sandy Hore-Ruthven

  • Caroline Gooch for the Liberal Democrats

  • And the Conservative Mayoral candidate Alastair Watson

The debate will cover a range of subjects. Do you have any questions you would like us to ask the candidates? Please leave them in your comments below or email Estel - who will be presenting the hustings - directly on estel.farellroig@reachplc.com

We will be running a second debate with the other five candidates at a later date, with further details to be released soon.

Here are the other five candidates standing to be the next Bristol Mayor:

  • Tom Baldwin from the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) is campaigning on an anti-austerity ticket.
  • Robert Clarke the Candidate for Reform UK, formerly the Brexit Party, calls for Bristol to be a ‘lockdown free zone’.
  • Pub landlord Sean Donnelly pledges to revitalise city centre landmarks and boost tourism.
  • Independent John Langley says party politics MUST be put to one side and pledges to end 'protest tourism'.

  • 23-year-old drama student Oska Shaw is running a 'Rights for Nature' election campaign.
