Bristol man who died in hospital 24 days after assault in Essex named

A Bristol man who died in hospital more than three weeks after being assaulted in Essex has been named.

Essex Police were called to Vineyard Street in Colchester following reports of an assault on August 19.

When officers arrived, they found a 46-year-old man had been seriously injured, EssexLive reports.

He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but died 24 days later as a result of his injuries.

An inquest into the death was opened at Essex Coroner's Court on Wednesday, September 30 and the victim was named as Steven Warburton, 46, of Bristol.

Coroner's assistant, Marianne Robson, said: "On August 19, Mr Warburton was taken to Colchester Hospital following an assault.

"He was transferred to Queens Hospital where he sadly passed away on September 12."

A post-mortem examination carried out by Dr Benjamin Swift at Colchester Hospital has not yet recorded an official cause of death due to awaiting the results of toxicology and histology results.

Due to an ongoing police investigation, senior coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray did not fix a date for Mr Warburton's full inquest.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: "We were called during the early hours of Wednesday, August 19 with reports a 46-year-old man had been seriously injured after he was assaulted on Vineyard Street.

"The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but sadly died of his injuries on Saturday, September 12."
