Bristol man seriously hurt in crash with lorry in Devon

A man from Bristol has suffered suspected serious injuries when the car he was driving was involved in a crash with an HGV lorry in south Devon.

The collision happened at lunchtime on Wednesday on the A379 just outside the town of Kingsbridge, near Plymouth.

The 54-year-old Bristol man, who has not been named, was driving a Mazda car when it was involved in a collision with an HGV lorry being driven by a man from Cornwall.

Police locally described the collision as a 'serious' one, and emergency services rushed to the scene at just before 1.15pm on Wednesday, September 23.

"The collision involved two vehicles, an HGV and a blue Mazda car," said a spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall police. "The driver of the Mazda, a 54 year old male from the Bristol area, was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth with suspected serious injuries.

The driver of the HGV, a 53 year old man from the Launceston area, was uninjured. The road was closed for five hours while investigations at the scene took place.

Reports from the scene confirmed the Bristol man was initially trapped in his vehicle, and an air ambulance attended the location, but it is not known if he was flown to hospital or taken by land ambulance.

"Officers from Plympton Roads Policing Team and the Serious Collisions Investigation Team attended the scene and are conducting the investigation.

"Police would like to thank members of the public for their patience during the road closure. If anyone witnessed the collision, please call 101 and quote log 418 of 23rd September 2020," he added.

The road, the main one across the South Hams district of south Devon, was closed for the entire afternoon as collision investigators worked at the scene.
