Bristol man evades more than £245k in income tax

A Whitehall man evaded more than £245,000 in tax.

HMRC has handed Imran Ajaib, of Gordon Road, a £172,032 penalty after he deliberately defaulted on payments.

Ajaib, formerly of Parkside Road in Bradford, failed to pay £245,760 in income tax in the year up to April 2016.

His details have been published in HMRC's latest list of deliberate defaulters and will remain there for a year.

The list contains three other Bristol tax-evaders whose details were published over the last year.

One is Dr Bishnu Upadhaya, who runs two therapy companies based in Sunnydene, Brislington.

He deliberately defaulted on £31,884 in tax between 2015 and 2017.

The therapist, who treats patients for issues including thumb-sucking and fear of success, was charged £20,087 by HMRC.

Dr Upadhaya, who charges £350 for an appointment, runs the UK College for Health, Medical and Research, and the Centre for Holistic and Psychological Healthcare.

The list also includes Café 96, in Henleaze Road, which was charged £23,539 because of deliberate tax defaults between 2012 and 2018.

The business, which evaded payments of £45,789, has a string of glowing reviews on TripAdvisor, with an average of four stars.

Another Bristol defaulter is Erol Macit, who owns Ezo Turkish Restaurant on Gloucester Road.

He failed to pay £185,005 between 2010 and 2016, which resulted in a penalty of £161,879.

HMRC publishes details when a person or business has made at least one deliberate default on more than £25,000.

The list is updated every three months and a defaulter's details are removed after a year.
