Bristol man admits having explosive devices at his home

A Bristol man has admitted having homemade explosive devices and weapons at his home.

Daniel Magee, 38, appeared before Bristol Crown Court today (February 7), after police searched his Southmead house at the end of last year.

Richard Posner, prosecuting, said the explosives were "contained within a number of Kinder eggs".

Judge Peter Blair QC, the Recorder of Bristol, said Magee would be sentenced on March 27.

He pleaded guilty to making an explosive substance, relating to 14 homemade explosive devices.

He admitted two charges of fraudulent evasion of a prohibition, relating to two flick knives and a retractable baton.

The defendant, of Shetland Road, also admitted possessing an offensive weapon designed for the discharge of a noxious substance, namely three stun guns.

He told the court the charges of fraudulently evading prohibition related to weapons imported from China.

Police and the Explosives Ordnance Disposal Team swooped on the house back on December 28 and carried out a search of the property.

A cordon was set up and a small number of people evacuated from their homes as a precaution.

"There is still some work being done around electronic devices that were found on December 28," Mr Posner said.

"That's to identify the purpose of the defendant having acquired the weapons in his possession and the explosive substances."

Mr Posner asked for a charge of having an article with a blade, relating to a sword allegedly found in the defendant's car boot, to lie on file.

Representing Magee, Michael Hall asked for a pre-sentence report to be prepared ahead of March 27.

The defendant appeared via video link from prison for the short hearing.
